History

There are a lot of confusing accounts and versions about the history of card games. Circumstances related to the origin of card games remain to be a big mystery, and there are quite a number of contending claims about how card games really begun. The reason why there seems to be a lot of controversy and confusion on the origins of popular games is because there is a lack of historical records and accounts about them.

Most games were considered unimportant by historians and got only passing references in most of their writings. This is also the case with blackjack. This popular card game has what might be considered a muddled past.

Vingt et Un and Blackjack

Many sectors believe that blackjack started in France during the 17th century. It was known at that time as Ving et Un, which literally means 21. Most historians are inclined to take this position regarding the origins of blackjack as there are also other games that have the same names and follow the same rules.

However, there are a few basic differences between 21 and blackjack. In Vingt et Un, the dealer is given the option to double and players place their bets at the end of each round. This is not the case in blackjack. The name “blackjack” is attributed to the black jack and ace of spades. The main objective in blackjack is generally the same in all the versions of the popular card game, and you need to obtain a total of 21 in order to win. If you obtain the natural blackjack, you will get a higher payout.

Seven and a Half and Blackjack

Another 17th century card game which is linked to blackjack is seven and a half, which originated in Italy. This card was played with the 7, 8 and 9 cards as well as with the face cards. The objective of this card game is for the player to obtain a hand of exactly seven and a half points. The cards 7, 8 and 9 have values equivalent to one, while the face cards are assigned half a point each. In this card game, the King with diamonds is classified as a wild card and card players are considered bust when they go over 7 and a half points.

Blackjack in the US and North America

The game of Blackjack was introduced in the US and the rest of North America towards the end of the French Revolution. There were no laws then banning gambling, and blackjack flourished at a time when crackdowns against the card game were going on in France. Blackjack players in France came in droves to the US and North America to gamble. It was also during this time that savvy players began introducing tips and giving advice on how to play and win in blackjack. Major changes in the game of blackjack occurred during the 19th century. Several games, including blackjack, were banned in the US as it was believed to have spurred the spate of crimes during that time.

With the ongoing crackdown, several groups went underground and secret clubs of blackjack players and enthusiasts mushroomed in the US and North America. Restrictions continued through the 1920s. However, gambling games had their renaissance in the 1930s in Las Vegas. To this day, Las Vegas remains to be the mecca for players of blackjack and other popular card games.
